Purpose of the Mission

In our quest to heal technological trauma and promote equitable innovation, GCI conducted a fact-finding mission to Samos, Greece. This island serves as a critical entry point for refugees and hosts a significant number of asylum seekers. Our objective was to understand the technological challenges faced by this diverse community and to identify opportunities for compassionate innovation that benefit both asylum seekers and the local community.

Engagement with the Community

During our mission, we engaged with a broad spectrum of the Samos community:

• Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): We met with local NGOs providing essential services to asylum seekers, focusing on education, legal aid, and social integration.

• Local Residents and Businesses: Conversations with residents and business owners provided insights into the social dynamics and the impact of the refugee presence on the local economy.

• Asylum Seekers: We listened to the experiences of asylum seekers to understand their needs, aspirations, and the technological barriers they face.

Findings

Our interactions revealed several challenges:

• Inaccurate Digital Mapping: Many vital locations, such as refugee camps, NGO centers, and essential services, were either missing or incorrectly placed on digital maps. This misinformation hindered access to resources and services.

• Limited Communication Infrastructure: Asylum seekers faced difficulties in communicating with their families due to inadequate network infrastructure and limited access to affordable communication services.

• Language Barriers for Local Businesses: Local businesses struggled to communicate with non-Greek-speaking customers, limiting their ability to serve and benefit from a diverse clientele.

Innovative Solutions

Aligned with our mission to prioritize value creation over extraction, we initiated the following solutions:

1. Updating Digital Maps:

   • Objective: Improve the accuracy of online maps to enhance accessibility to essential services.
   • Action: Collaborated with local NGOs and residents to gather accurate location data of critical facilities.
   • Outcome: Submitted comprehensive updates to platforms like Google Maps, ensuring that asylum seekers and service providers can navigate the island more effectively.

2. Enhancing Communication Networks:

   • Objective: Enable asylum seekers to communicate with their families and access online educational resources.
   • Action: Performed network upgrades for a local educational NGO at no cost. This included installing new hardware and optimizing existing systems.
   • Outcome: Improved internet connectivity allowed guests to make calls home and participate in online learning, aiding in their emotional well-being and language acquisition.

3. Introducing ChatGPT as a Translation Tool for Local Businesses:

   • Objective: Assist local businesses in overcoming language barriers with non-Greek-speaking customers.
   • Action: Provided training sessions to local business owners on how to use ChatGPT as a translation service.
   • Outcome: Equipped businesses with a practical tool to communicate more effectively with a diverse customer base, enhancing customer service and potentially increasing revenue.
